Let me describe some marketing mindsets that I see which hurt business owners. These mindsets can be overcome and re-formed around more positive, success-focused mindsets once you are aware and intentional about change. Here are 3:

“Marketing is Mysterious and Unpredictable”

Many business owners think that marketing is one of those mysterious, almost mystical things “out there” that they cannot get their hands around. They tend to think that some people have it and some people don’t, and that they will probably never be able to figure out the marketing puzzle. However, the truth is that marketing (if done right) can be very controllable and very predictable. We will see this in a moment.

“Marketing Doesn’t Work For My Business”

Because they have tried many things with little success these business owners have come to the mistaken conclusion that marketing just isn’t ever going to work for them or their business. This is quite unfortunate because the growth of their revenue depends on their ability to leverage marketing. However, these folks are defeated before they take the next step.

“I Stink at Marketing”

The truth is that we can all learn, improve, and become much more effective marketers if we have intentionality and the right guidance! Very few business owners start out being exceptional marketers. However, the most successful ones are learners. They are constantly trying to learn more, improve, and get better results. Just because you’re not very effective today does not mean that you will always stink at marketing. That can change – you can change!

You must come to believe that you are in the marketing business! That’s right. You may be a plumber, a chiropractor, or a shop owner. But you must begin to see yourself first and foremost as a marketer! It doesn’t matter what industry you are in, you are in the marketing business. This is the mindset of the most successful entrepreneurs. I remind myself that I am in the marketing business – I do it in the coaching industry, but I am in the marketing business, and you are too!

You Can Learn to Be a Better Marketer

You must begin to believe that you can learn and become more effective. And you can! I like to quote Brian Tracy who says, “Successful people simply practice successful habits.” They figure out what behaviors will drive their success and they repeat those behaviors until they become habits. By learning the right marketing behaviors and practicing them over time, you will become more successful at marketing.

When You Grow in Marketing, Your Business Will Grow

You must accept the fact that marketing is your key to growth, and as you become more effective as a marketer, your business will grow!
